front brake piston problems..

Post by spenceley1 » Sun Jul 14, 2013 1:11 pm

So got my wheel off and cleaning up my brakes/ pistons, problem is only three pistons of all 8 will actually even move..
2 inside pistons on left caliper and bottom inside on right caliper... although one piston on left caliper will not go back in more than half way..

They all look clean from what I can see, not scratched at all so any advice on how to free them up would be much appreciated

Without question, the seals have corrosion behind them.
Will need a caliper strip, remove the pistons with the correct tool, or by gently and logically pumping each one out to a certain point.
then removing each dust deal and piston seal, scrape out all the filth and corrosion in the grooves (i use a v sharp flat head small screwdriver to remove the worst then a dremel and brush to do the rest.
use red rubber grease on the seals, clean up and polish the pistons and refit.

if any of the parts are knackered then replace, seals are often fine and just need a clean and grease, pistons if rusty then replace.

the difference with good free calipers is huge. its one of these jobs i hate doing, but once done is possibly one of the most satisfying jobs once you ride it.

Ah damn it, a strip down it is then!
Might as well paint them whilst they are in bits then too :)

Thanks for the quick reply mate, much appreciated :rocks:

Ok hit a problem already... bolts holding the caliper halfs together are pretty solid, almost rounded 2 heads already, do I need a special torx socket for them?
