Bike cuts out when wet

Post by davedrave » Tue Apr 05, 2011 12:12 am

Hi all
I was driving in some heavy rain/hail the other day and the bike started running on only 3 cylinders and cut out after about 30 seconds of this. I thought it was my charging problem but the bike started again after sitting for a while. It has no mixture/sparking problems since I have had it, ie i think a connection got wet and the current wasn't passing because of this.

Now in all fairness I had the side fairings off at the time, but It has done this before with them on and in the wet.

Question is, is this a common problem, and what can I do to prevent it, I assume a bit of silicon sealant in particular places?

Thanks ;)

It it was down 1 cylinder then the obvious thing to look at is spark plugs and the leads. Check to see whether the spark plug recesses aren't filled with water, they have a drain hole which can get blocked.

If it was a coil issue 2 cylinders would go down, if it was a main charge issue (battery terminals, earths etc), all 4 cylinders would go down!

If you know which cylinder is playing up it shoudl be fairly simple to find the problem through a process of elimination.
