I am having major problems sourcing parts here in Australia, seems that not many 400's were imported.
The guys at the local bike shop know as much as their parts catalogues tell them.

Went to buy some fork seals, guy looks in his catalogue and says the FZR400 have either a 41mm or 43mm seal. "I think I need a 38x50x9.5 seal" I say. I am told that a 38mm seal is not listed for the FZR400 and the guys that make the seals and produce the catalogue don't get things wrong. So I go home with a 41mm seal (by the way this all happened last Saturday morning before I took delivery of the bike, which I purchased off Ebay).

Bike arrives lunch time, I measure the forks and they are 38mm. Check the internet to see which bike have the same seal and go back to the bike shop and ask for a pair of fork seals to suit a 1998 Honda CR250. The guy behind the counter pulls out his catalogue and looks up the number then produces the correct seals for my FZR400 (1989 Honda CR250).

So I was thinking ( I know it can be dangerous), It would be great to have a database of alternate parts.

Would anyone be interested in helping out putting together such a database? The main thing is that it needs to be accurate. So it would have to be based on evidence and not on "Its should fit" entries.

Hi Evil,
I was thinking something a bit more in depth. For example I bet you didn't know that the cush drive from a Suzuki gn250 is a exact match for a cuch drive on the sachs 150 express.

Today I went to get a speedo cable for the fzr and the guy pulled one of some bike I didn't recognize (I should have asked) which is a perfect match.
As parts for the FZR get more rare we will need alternatives to keep the FZR alive.
The database I propose would list the Yamaha part number, description and a list a alternative from other bikes and if its a exact match or requires some modification.
The database would be update as we find parts that work on the FZR.

At the moment I am hunting for a FZR airbox (cant find one in Australia). I would be nice to know which airbox from a difference bike works and what modification is requires.

Um ... well I confess you got me on the crush drive.

The FZR400 1WG isn't so different to the 600 3HE and we can get some of the genuine parts through a Yamaha parts specialist. After that there's this forum and e-bay. The 1wg's are getting rarer and they're getting to the end of their lives, you can tell that as they're getting used for "first bikes". This is like the car you got just after your test so they get cut about a bit, crashed and broken for parts. Unfortunatley they haven't made it to cult or collectors bikes that's mainly the NC30.

The FZR600 3HE air box should fit your bike. Trouble is your going to need new carb rubbers as these are notorious for going hard and then they're impossible to get on. You could be better off with pod filters but that will give you problems with the mixture being weak.
