When stripping forks, why does it say NOT to remove the adjuster from the fork piston assembly?

I need to remove my adjusters from the piston as one needs replacing.

What will happen if i remove it, Will i screw up some settings?

Is it screwed on so many turns? Does the nut underneath set the depth at which the adjuster is set?

Or Is the lower nut just a lock nut and the adjuster is screwed down until it stops (out of thread)?

Make a mark on the tube, measure to the bottom of the lock nut and put it back together with the same measurement and it will be fine.

The damping needle in the centre of the preload adguster goes into the tube, if you put it back together to high or too low it will mess with your damping adjustablity range.

Is there no information for accurately setting for the needle?

for example:

1.Turn the needle fully clockwise
2. Fasten the adjuster onto the piston until the needle contacts the piston.
3. Fasten the lock nut,
4.Then so many turns anti-clockwise for the needle to set it at the correct position?

The adjustment is critical but simple to set.

Check how many clicks there are now [15?] and then fit your new adjuster in the approx correct position.

Count ther new number of clicks and keep readjusting the lock nut until the correct number of clicks is achieved.

Refit the top nut to the adjuster first, so that you can feel the clicks.

so what we are saying is.....

1.Wind the adjuster out fully anti-clockwise (more brass showing).

2. Assemble the adjuster body to the piston.

3. The adjuster can then be turned clock-wise for 15 clicks.

Less than 15 clicks the adjuster body is on the piston to far

more than 15 clicks the adjuster body is not on the piston far enough.

Thats the way I do it, you will find the adjuster wants turn instead of the locknut on final tightening, so it takes time to get exactly right, keeps going plus or minus 1 click or 2.

Is it definately 15 clicks in total from max to min?

It is on my RC30, which is similar, but thats why I said check yours first, cant you check the other good one?

Maybe some one with an original bike will confirm, it is likely to be between 12 and 15.

I have tried the un-assembled unit and i make it 11 clicks. I would like to have someone to confirm this if they can on their NC30. It would be appreciated.

So i say that if you wind your adjuster all the way in... clockwise 11 clicks. Then attached the adjuster main assembly to the piston. Screw that on until you feel the adjuster needle contact the piston. Then you can fasten the lock nut.

This will then give you 11 adjustments from full needle insert (shown on the right) to needle withdrawn (shown in the middle).
