Won't rev passed 5000rpm

Hi
can anyone help? Bought my wife an RVF 400, in the past she has owned a CBR400,this ran brilliantly. The problem is the RVF has done no miles in the last year, so has been sitting around. It will not rev past 5000rpm when in gear...will rev to the red line at standstill. I have changed the plugs ,fresh petrol, checked the charging circuit, replaced the air filter and fuel tap. I have pulled the choke on at 5000 and this makes no difference. Bike starts fine but will not go above 5000rpm on load. Any ideas?

sounds like it is a problem with the restriction circuit,it's whats known as limp home mode where it cuts the ignition at 5000rpm.

check the wiring at the clocks and double check everywhere else as well.

if its not this then it will be more than likely fuel related.

Make sure the speedo is plugged in as it is usually this that causes it.

It should be an easy fix.
Welcome to the forum too

as the boys have rightful pointed out it sounds like Limp home mode and has been reported loads of times on the forum, most often with people who remove the speedo in the expectation that it will remove the 112MPH limiter.....it doesn't!!

i am optimistic it is an easy fix too, just have you mini file, wet'n'dry, contact cleaner and water repellent to hand to clean all the connector blocks and little earths on the back of the speedo. they are only little m3 bolts (IIRC) so the eylets through which they pass are prone to being bent and easily damaged

let us know the craic any way

Many thanks for the advice, :) can I replace the resister if its faulty...and the 112mph restrictor is still in place, I may mod the speedo after I get the "Limp home" problem solved.

Hi All
Checked all wiring and resistor in speedo all OK. Started the bike with no choke and to my surprise the front rh cylinder won't fire....put an old plug on the plug cap and am getting a spark so I think the carbs will have to come off after all.

THE SAGA CONTINUES,
Hi all
have stripped carbs and have found the slow speed jet in one totally blocked. Rebuilt carb and sorted new lead and plug cap on the one needing replaced, now the misfire is intermittant and takes off fine above 6000 if the clutch is slipped....... will replace the rest of the plug caps and leads and try again. Has anyone else had this problem of having a misfire at around 5,000 rpm but clears above this rpm?
Hope I don't have to take the bl**dy carbs off again.....
