Everybody, this is my first post, so im not sure how this works, but here goes anyway.

Its quite simle really i was riding down the A14 on my way home the other day after buying my NC23, and i noticed my foot was sliping off the footpeg. I thought to my self thats odd so i looked down and to my horror my right boot was covered in oil so i pulled up as soon as i could, only to find that the oil filler cap is missing, so to cut the story short the RAC man came gave me a splash of oil & made me a make-shift oil filler cap. Home i went.

So thats the scene set, well since then i got me a oil filler cap off ebay which said it was for a NC29 no other details. i got it based on the logic that the haynes manual is the same so its got the same engin. And it fits to my joy so out come the horrible looking bodge the RAC man made me.

my dilemer is i cant really remember what it looked like, as in how long the dipstick was.
So my question is could someone either confirm for me that the dipstick is the same?
or could someone measure the distance between the base of the cap and the two markers on the dipstick?

oh, my bike is a 1989, NC23 CBR400 RRK model

ive just compared the 2
the nc29 dipstick is about 5mm shorter than the 23's,but saying that,the very top of the nc29s full mark is in line with the 23's

thanks for the info, at least now i can check the oil level with confidence. n if i keep it on the full line i know i'll be good.

n next time i'll make sure i put thing back on properly so i dont have this problem again

And dont forget when you check the oil, you dont screw it in. You just lay it on top of the hole, bike upright then check.

everyone seems to check the oil a different way!
i warm the engine or do it when soon after a ride.
remove dip stick, wipe it, screw it back in, pull bike off its stand so its upright for a minute, put it back on stand, whip out the dip stick and check it.

Haynes tells us to (pg 0.11):
1) warm engine
2) support bike in upright position undisturbed for a few minutes
3) remove and wipe dip stick. insert dipstick but do NOT screw in,
4) check level, replenish if needed.

well i've been using the not screwed in technique, as per the haynes manual. n thats the reason why my brother said the oil cap would have been left off in the first place, causing my whole dilema.

Hi , as a trained Honda M/C tech from the 80s i can assure you all that the correct method is to NOT screw the dipstick into the crankcase.
You should REST it on the first thread as per the Hains manual stipulates with the bike upright and on level ground.
The correct oil level is then correctly guaged and an engine oil shortage will not occur.
