I replaced my 2 wheel bearings as a pair because 1 was a bit dodgy...initially there was play somewhere and I suspected between spindle and bearing inner race - but changed the bearings anyway.

I have slop.

17mm inner diameter of rear bearings and the spndle is 15.5mm

Does anyone know what it should be?

It's not like fitting a bearing in say a gearbox where it needs to go on tight.... but 1.5mm of play is surely wrong. I'd expect it to be 16.5mm or 16.8mm or something slightly smaller so there's wiggle room for grease and installing/removing wheel etc.

Can anyone help please?

Ok a bit late in replying but it appears you have the wrong spindle, it should be 17mm diameter.
