3tj Bad Starter. Any ideas?

I have finally got the 3tj i bought a couple of months ago back together and in an MOTable condition. It was bought as a non runner. The bike had been left for 3 years and was running proir to being left. The previouse owner had fitted new plugs and afetr which gave up and sold it as a nonrunner. I quickly diagnosed the fault (no spark) as the ignition/fuel pump relay being faulty.
When i first replaced the relay the bike took some turning over to start, but eventually fired up. I thought nothing of this as it had been stood for so long and still had the old fuel in it.
Now with new fuel in it, it seems to have the same problem. It turns over but floods before it fires up. If i leave it a few minutes it will fire up but is still a bit chuggy to start.
As the weather has been terrible i have not had chance to give it a good run out to see if it just needs its cobwebs blowing out.
Has anyone else had similar problems with theirs? What are the most likely suspects?

I guess you've cleaned the carbs ... maybe the choke is sticking on or the float bowl gaskets may have gone ... or the petrol supply valves in the carbs are worn so the fuel isn't stopping when the float rise.

i think the first oppertunity you have get the bike out for a quick run and hopefully that may clear the problem.....

failing that, maybe worthwhile stripping the carbs and giving them a clean whilst checking everything else like ec says.....

no time like the now to do it,all bloody winter......happy days  bring on the summer

Cheers guys. Confirmed what i thought! Going to give it a good run out whenever possible and if that has no effect will strip the carbs.
Unfortunately this has to go to the bottom of the to do pile as i am juggling several other projects. Im currently rebuilding my mates CCM supermoto (frame back from powdercoating) ,i have my ZX7 to respray and reseal the calipers and the Aprilia needs a winter service and chain sprockets fitting (Oh, its got an oil leak as well). To add to this i bought a ZX6 race bike last week (£300 bargain confiscated by the police, no insurance) and it needs its valve clearances doing. I was also going to get some tuning done to the FZR4/6 but i dont think that will get done this winter.
I have forgotton what the house looks like as i seem to have moved permanently into the garage!

I braved the cold yesterday and took it for a 20 mile blast. Tried to start it tonight and it started a bit easier but still coughed and spluttered a bit at first.
The next step when i get chance is to clean the carbs. Still not bad considering how long its been stood! Cheers all.

Chuck some carb clean adative in the tank and run it through.
