Hi fellas,

Just looking to get a hand at what I could do to fix my problem (if is even a problem). I bought an rvf400 close to 2 years ago that and since then have done a full service and recently got it back on the road and it seems to be running pretty well except for one issue.

The problem I seem to have is it just feel as crisp as I thought it would once you get it past 10k rpm. I have been comparing it to videos and stats of what the should be running and it seems they should generally be hitting 80kmh at like ~12500 rpm in 1st. My bike, however, will hit about 80kmh once you get to the redline in 1st. Hopefully I could just get some advice where to start looking or even better if I am just being a dickhead and overthinking it.

Appreciate any help/advice.

Standard gearing and engine?

Yeah bone stock engine, carbs(Haven't check for different springs or needles) and exhaust system. As for gearing I haven't really checked to be honest. I will check it as soon as I get home.

Edit: I just checked the sprockets. Looks like they are standard 14F and 38R

My info says NC35 gearing is 15/38.

In that case I would have thought that the speedo would have showed a higher speed than what your actually doing? I feel like the problem is with fueling. The fuel flow from the tank to the carbies looks pretty shite.

14/38 is lower gearing, more revs to get same speed ie good for acceleration but more revs in cruise mode and maybe less max speed. But this will not affect speed/rpm relationship as NC30/35 drives the speedo off the gearbox thus the tacho and speedo readings will always read the same relationship no matter what sprocket combination is used.

Agree lack of crispness most likely a fueling issue, above 10000rpm is dependent on fuel flow and/or main jet. Fuel flow from tank is vacuum controlled on an OEM setup, vacuum tap function could be an issue.

I might start with pulling the petcock and checking that before I rip the carbies off again. Also what is the best way to check if your tank breather is goosed or still good?

Well went through the tank and everything was all good. Pulled the carbies and opened up the bowls and it looks like a main jet wasn't done up, just floating around. Wonder what idiot forgot to tighten that up...
