Shims

I used to have lots and lots of shims as I have 3 dismanteled engines so I had more shims than I'd ever need.

But thanks to being a kind helpful sole, who lent his verniers to someone, they all got lost as I kept them in a bag that lived in the verniers case!!

Basically I need shims but I want to buy a shim kit, I dont want to take the bike to bits to check and figure out what shim is needed and then order it, I want to be able to swap it as and when.

So what shim kit do I need, what size are the shims? 7.48mm? and what thickness increases etc eg prox offer the following -

7.48mm diameter - Includes three valve shims in each size between 1.20 and 3.50mm in .05mm increments. 141 shims in total. (example: 1.20mm 1.25mm, 1.30mm, 1.35mm, 140mm)

OR

7.48mm diameter - Includes three valve shims in each size between 1.225 and 3.475mm in .05mm increments. 141 shims in total. (example: 1.225mm, 1.275mm, 1.325mm, 1.375mm).

Seen kits from hotcams and prox.

Or has anyone got a bulk of old shims they want to sell for a few £?

Yep, 7.48 mm is the size. I'm just doing my valves at the moment and ordered 11 shims from here last night;

A lot cheaper than a full set and they are scheduled to arrive Friday so not long to wait. I had to order 5 of the 2.15 shims so it is possible you may struggle with some sizes in a kit. The shims I require are all in the 2.00 - 2.30 range.

Surely you'd be much better off checking what's in there first, then chopping and swapping before ordering the remainder of what's required? You could end up buying 141 shims of which you might only ever use 3 or 4!

Wish I had more money than sense... :whistle:

Yeah but, the shims I had and have been lost are all out of engines, so i will need at least 32 additional shims as i have 2 complete engines now missing shims.

However with the race bike as i can't seem to find a set that increase in 0.025 increments I have kinda come the the conclusion to see whats in there and then buy shims either side of that as then the shims i am buying will be in and around the range i am going to need.

Its not a case of having more money than sense, i just dont want to take the bike down do the shims, find i need a few and then have to leave it a few days before the shims i need turn up. i like to do anything on the bike in one hit, that way it helps to avoid making mistakes.
