I took my nc30 off the road to do it up a bit, it was running fine just wanted to upgrade it a bit but now it won't run and I am starting to give up
I have fitted:
gsxr1000 flywheel (brand new)
rick oliver reg
rick oliver earthing kit
and followed cammo carb building guild.
I went to start it up and it was only running on 3 cylinders and would only run on full choke.
So I started thinking the rubber manifolds were super hard and old so I fitted new ones but now the bike will not run at all and I am at a lost what to check next?
Oh yeah the battery is good the plugs have a strong spark and the are very wet with fuel after trying to start.
To me I would think carbs but even spraying carb clean in the inlets it still won't start.

sounds like carb trouble chaz...get em of and clean/check/adjust them..at least if its the same you know its not them...

Cheers I may of got my hands on some standard carbs so I'm going to swap them over and see what happens

why, have you modified ones on there now?

I followed the cammo's carb guild where you add extra washers and drill out some of the holes bigger

If the plugs are very wet then they won't be helping. They might need drying out or replacing.

Plugs may be fouled. I recently overhauled my carbs and it was running like a dog. I pulled the carbs off and checked float levels again but in the end it was 2 fouled plugs. I've even had a situation where a plug out of the head sparks okay but not while in situ so don't count on that as a test.

One that does work well (as long as you can start it) is to pull a lead off each while its running and watch the tacho / listen. You'll soon work out which ones are firing.

Make sure the center electrode to outer body is not bridged by crap and give them a gentle clean up with a wire brush and gap then.

Ok great cheers for the help, I've got 2 weeks to get it running or its going to steve at gt motorcycles but £75 per hour it won't be a cheap fix

is there nobody knowlegable on here nearby to you that can help you get it running?

If I were close i'd come over and help you sort it out.

for the scale of the problem I wouldn't pay a professional to do what is "routine maintencene" on an old bike, this kind of stuff needs doing often to old bike like nc30 so best to learn it yourself.

Good mechanics are always worht to have on hand though, I use a local bike shop for fork rebuilds and other pain in the arse jobs as they have all the special tools and measuring stuff and they are cheap and good, I can drop off and pick up next day like new :)

But with old bikes, general fettling takes time and can happen often so best to get stuck in.

Something like this is only going to be down to fuel air spark, start from the basics and work logically.


fuel? (tap ok, vaccum pipe ok?) carbs ok, idle screw up enough? full choke no throttle?
air (usuualyl fine for at least a fireup)
spark (plugs / coil / battery charge)

if you didnt mess with cams timing is unlikely to be an issue as no chain to slack.

I'm normally alright with doing most think myself and I've have a friend who is a marine engineer and both of use can't work it out.
The bike was running fine but now it just won't start
It has a good battery, good spark plugs which have done less than 700km's, carbs are filling with fuel so it should start but I've really run out of idea's, This weekend I'm refitting all the standard parts back on and see if I have any luck.
