Nc24 thermostat

Post by mika159 »

Hi all. First post on here. Recent owner of a beat up an broken abused and tortured nc24. Plenty of tlc later and I'm running kind of sweet. Not ready for a test run yet but close I think. Quick question, is the thermostat the same for the nc30? And where is a cheap place to order one from? Not the fan switch, the one for the gauge. Also best place to replace the dreaded regulator, what is the most reliable one to go for??? Thanks all, stumbled across this forum and it's ace. Been a real help so far.

the thermostat is a little thing inside the block bolted to the front right cylinder of the engine, it opens with water temp and lets water through the radiator.

I take it you mean the thermounit probe that is screwd into the thermostat housing.

Ie. you have a non-functioning temperature gauge?

Did you check the gauge works first? you can do this by rmeoving the single connector from the thermounit probe and touching it to a good earth point on the frame with a piece of wire (dont hold for longer than 5 seconds though) and the temperature needle should shoot straight to hot if the gauge is working.

If the needle doesn't move then your gauge is faulty, if it does then you have a bad connection or faulty thermounit. (quite rare)

the acutal thermounit is expensive part number 37750pc1004 you can get from any honda dealer or Rick Oliver on here.

and yes the unit is the same on the nc30 and nc24

for reference the thermostat is number 1

The gauge works fine but the temp climbs to full within seconds of the bike being turned over, and yeh I did mean the thermoprobe lol just didn't know what else to call is.......oops. I've got water flowing so I'm guessing it's the probe that's at fault as the temp is at full before the bike is even slightly warm. Thanks for the response, appreciated. I'm sure there will be many more questions to come.

gague could be faulty or there could be a short or the probe could be shot.

strange it doesnt do it when the bike is turned on?

try unpluggint the wire from the thermounit and see if the temp still moves? if it does then you have a short somewhere on that wire

Finally got to the bottom of it. Yay. All of a sudden the temp started working normally, bit odd thought I lol. Found a bad connection joining the wires taped up in the loom. If you wiggle it the temp leaps up to full wiggle it again and it drops. Happy days. Still heaps of problems to figure out but that's one more finally sorted out. Next in line is the front right indicator is on dim when the lights are turned on. Still flashes when I indicate but dim full dim full not off on off on. Almost like the parking light is on. Doesn't seem right to me, is this normal?

the indicators are dual fillament bulbs

they double as running lights.

the plug from the indicator has 3 wires, orange / orange white and green i think, and the same but blue / blue white and green the other side.

cut the blue / white or orange / white wire on the side you are having trouble with

Damn is there anything you don't know about the nc's. 100% totally appreciate the advice. Still more to sort but that's it for the electrics now I think. Unless the new regulator doesn't cure my charging issues. But I will be asking for advice a little later after the greater part of the bodywork, cleaning and painting is close to finished. So for now again thank you........again.

Hi all, bumping this thread because I have sort of a similar problem:

Instead of moving all the way to the red, my temp gauge hardly moves (it does move, but hardly). Usually it doesn't move much further than this or less (most of the time it moves only just past that black bar) when ridden normally:
Image

I have checked the thermostat assembly (part No.1 of picture) and it opens up between 80 and 85 degrees Celsius (NTC=82 degrees Celsius) so that can't be it. I have also cleaned the electrical connector connected to the temperature probe/unit (part No.15 of picture) because it was very dirty inside so I thought that it could give a bad electrical connection causing the gauge to not move at all.

(Sorry to steal your photo Neosophist :P )

I've ridden my bike after I cleaned said electrical connection and it still hardly moves. I do know that my temp gauge works because if I let it idle/ride very slowly for God-knows-how-long it slowly crawls towards the middle or red of the gauge. I've also put a piece of wire inside the connector and shorted it to the frame and my temp gauge went way beyond the red:

Is my temperature probe broken or should I check something else?

there is nothing worng with it, that is where the temperature should sit when the bike is runnign normally. nc24 reads just over cold on the guage on a good workign bike.

So I do not have to order a new temp probe? because it just seems so weird to me that the gauge would give such a low reading. Asking just so I can be sure that I'm not having any problems with my bike...
