Howsit Guys,

I'm relatively new to both biking and forums, so please bear with me as i go through the process, I have just recently (2 weeks ago) acquired a very pretty, modified CBR 400 nc23 tri-arm, she has been chopped and doesn't have most of the sub frame and thus a lot of the wiring has been moved around, and i am having some issues with getting her running smoothly, my problems im having are;

(Solved) Battery not charging, was a wiring fault that we found at the mechanics - after much dismay - what i did before solving was;
- Replaced Rectifier
- Replaced Starter Solenoid/Relay

She then was running really nicely for a week, I noticed a bit of choppiness as i was riding in the lower revs and she would sometimes cut out when i pulled up to a robot, this went away after a while, so i thought that maybe it was just dirty jets or something to that effect, then yesterday morning I ran out of gas (me being a noob) and had a mate bring me some more, but before i realised it was petrol i had ended up trying to start her, and obviously no petrol, i then rode her the remaining 2 km to work and parked her there for the day, then when i left work, the battery was a bit flat so i got a push start, and she ran perfect for about 30km, of which 15-20 was standstill (not confident enough for full filtering just yet) while riding I noticed that i had to rev her slightly to keep her on, now i don't actually know what revs im at at any point as the original owner had removed the heat gauge and the rev counter. i then got about 1km from home and she died at the robot, so t tried restarting and she was just turning, there was no firing happening, so i pushed her home. that night i want thru and checked all fuses and cables and plugs,everything was in place, so i jumped her off my better halfs car, she fired after bout 2 seconds, heavy smell of fuel, i had obviously flooded her a bit, didnt ride her to work then came home and tried to start, just turned, then tried to jump, just turned, resorted to bumping the motor, she fired, sounded very much off, like was missing a fire, all leads are sparking and the battery is not dead, thus here i stand, stumped.

She will turn,but will not start, seems to be missing a fire but again not sure, hoping someone can help me here.. stuck

I would double check your battery and all earths. What's the voltage at rest and at 3000rpm ( you will need a Rev counter of course). Are you sure your rectifier is doing its job? Check your alternator yellow wires at the plug, should be around 50v ac around 5000rpm. These bikes need a good known working battery and charging system in general before you look at other areas. The bike will always be hard to start if these items are not verified.

Hi, thanks for the reply, I spent the weekend working on the bike, went through all of the electrics, from the mag right thru to the starter, found that the starter just wasn't doing its job correctly, opened it up and one of the brushes was pretty much non existent, so I picked the new starter, stuck it in the bike yesterday, but now new problem, we took the carbs off the bike an we set the float levels and adjusted the pilot screws and bench balanced the vacuum, basically set them back to factory, and sadly we couldn't test the carbs as the bike wasn't turning, so i put in the new starter yesterday and we got her fired up, she sounded good, was revving a bit high so i tuned the idler a bit and got her idling smooth(ish), obviously now they need to be fine tuned on the bike, But, after altering the idler, petrol literally started pouring out of an overflow on my Head, just behind the plugs, in front of the carbs, this freaked me out so i turned off and thought maybe it was all the fuel from previously flooding just coming out, so i took the tank off and dried the motor and started her without the tank, ran nicely for a few minutes, then the fuel ran out, put the tank back on and she started spitting out all the fuel again, what im stuck with here is what do i need to fix? The pilots? re do the floats? thanks for the help.
