Backfire screen on air filter

Hi

Just interested to see if anyone has had a bad experience with the mod I have done. I am using a standard air filter but removed the steel gauze covering which is supposed to stop a fire if you get a big backfire. I did this mod on my Honda CFR250 and it definately made a difference to the breathing, and I am sure its just there more for litigation reasons than anything else. Anybody know any different?

It's not a modification I've ever heard off, but as another safety feature, I'd presume the gauze is there to stop the filter element falling onto the velocity stacks. If you want to increase the air-flow then can I suggest you use HRC filter foam and leave the gauze in place. What you do is remove the paper element and lay between 1 and 4 layers of HRC foam but the standard Honda filter is as good as any other.
