I have just replaced my OEM exhaust with a stainless steel jobby. I seem to get thru exhausts all the time. But not anymore!

There is a very annoying rattle between 5-6000 rpm, having now read about this I realise this a common complaint on some of these exhausts.

My question is how to quieten the damn thing down so it doesn't sound like a stone in a tin can.

The exhaust is new and has been painted black ( proper coating stuff ).


Will the noise quieten over time as they get more coked up?

I have a race can on, would a more restrictive can make it less tinny?

You may have read some of the things I tried but if not I couldn't get rid of the damn noise despite being careful on installation and trying to dampen with rubber bungs, coking up after a year or two of use made no difference. It looks like 29 in particular doesn't like these sort of pipes. The best pipes without a doubt are OEM in my opinion.

Out of interest where these the pipes off eBay a short while ago from dk spares? If so what was the circumference of the downpipes as they looked like they were made with the R model in mind.

Mine are the same, i was thinking of exhaust wrap .

There were from D&K, they look like new.

The coating looked new and had only just been done, maybe they looked a bit tarnished when removed. D&K offer a service to coat exhausts in the black stuff ( don't know the name ). The coating by the engine started smoking and smelling of burning on the first run! Thought my bike was on fire at one point. They are now a dull grey for the 1st 5-10cms.

They looked the same size as the ones I took off. I'll measure them next time I get the bike out.

The rattle is very annoying I thought something was about to fall off at first!

Hi chaps, sorry to re-visit an old thread but I think there is a similar problem on the 23 I've purchased.

The rattle comes and goes mainly on tick over but goes with a blip of the throttle, I crapped myself when I first heard it, it sounded like a valve spring was broken or somthing of that ilk. But on the next run it was fine. I did notice when I rode it home that there was a noise like a gasket blowing under load but that seems to have disappeard too.

I gather that this is the pipes and that's the way they are, nothing major to worry about?

Mine only appears at certain revs and appears to be a known fault on the stainless steel pipes for the NC29.

I am running a race exhaust can so maybe a different one with more back pressure may help solve it, or at least dampen it down a bit.

Its annoying but better than replacing the exhaust every other year - I was on my third one.

I thought stainless pipes were going to be great but ended up being the worst purchse I ever made for the bike, a hole in the revs at 2thou revs and the worst part was the damn rattle which drove me mad and made the bike sound like a cheap old ford escort. I put up with it for two years until a mate told me how bad it sounded when he was behind me. That look on his face was enough, off they came. Bike sounds great now with a low milage pampered OEM set on.

Well I found the source or my rattle, it was one od the collars had become loose and by prodding around I found it.

hey dunks,that is a VERY good idea that chap,im having the same problem on my nc30 with the stainless system rattling between 3-6k rpm,and wrapping it would quieten it down,i also have a small crack around one weld as well and think this isn't helping,but I will now wrap the part of the system that its coming from now,cheers,just didn't think of that .
