Hi guys,
I'm going to book the bike in a local garage to have the carbs balanced (done spark plugs, oil and filter). The bike runs ok but it slightly 'woolly' just off tickover.
Before I get this work done I thought it best to fit a new air filter, my bike is Jap spec and running standard exhaust. I'm not looking for performance gains just a good value air filter. Normally I'd use K&N for other bikes but couldn't find one listed.
Any recommendations?

Usual 'mod' on the NC is to cut out the element from the standard filter, and bond in a K&N element.

If its wolly just off tickover then check your float heights before being raped for £45 p/h labour charges

I think thats a fair price providing the workshop knows what they are doing.. your paying for knowledge and expeirence and their vast array of tools and things you might not have.

Anyway..

As pointed above.. it can most likely be sorted by yourself with simple DIY-esq tools if you have the motivation to do it... crappy off throttle is most likely dirty carbs / carbs out of adjustment.

A strip / clean and re-adjust to factory settings should see it running nice and crisp.

A genuine Honda one will probably cost more than the K&N?

But will cause you less fueling issues as by the sounds of it the OP doesnt seem to confident in taking the carbs off so the less problems the better.

If you want a genuine K+N, you'll have to wait until one comes up secondhand as they stopped making them ages ago. However, they do a panel filter that you can fit into the OEM one by removing the mesh, cutting out the stock paper and doing a bit of cutting along one side. K+N part number is 33-2006. However, you'll probably need to tinker with the jetting....

A correctly oiled K&N shouldn't affect the mixture enough to need re-jetting.
