Can anyone advise me on where to measure from and to the measure the float heights? I want to check them because I had the carbs off the other day to clean them and loads of screws where chewed, even the tops of the jets so I wouldn't be surprised if someone has been messing with the floats! I've only had this bike a few days and want to get her running spot on or as near as I can!

Turn the carbs upside down about 45 degree angle, slightly tilted not directly inverted.

Measure from the carb body where the float bowl gasket sits to the top of the float.

This is where you measure.

You want a float height of 6.8mm.

The EASIEST way to do this is to make your own float height tool using an old credit card / plastic card of some kind, gift card etc.

Cut out a 6.8mm recess that will sit on the carb body and over the float.

gonna pop the carbs off now and have a look whats going on as its started running rough again!

okay, just got inside the carbs, 115 jets all around and 35 main, however the left front and rear had the 5 hole tubes so ive corrected this to both rear with 5 holes, just going to measure the float heights and see what going on there

float heights where well out, i measured and put a little nick in a plastic card at 6.8mm or best as i could, even if it was 7mm it would be better than what they where at, they must have been set at about 10mm if not more?

seen some right rough carbs about.

if you cut the business card like in the pciture below you can get them bang on 6.8mm.

dont foret to set the pilot screws, 2 turns out.

screw them all the way in lightly then 2 full turns.. (put a dot on the scredriver handle to meaure 1 turn) some peopel do half a turn by mistke.

blow through everythign with good compressed air and carb cleaner and shouldrun like a watch.. dont forget to balance after.. while its apart whip the rocker boxes off and mesure the valve clearances, you dont have ot buy shims to get them set so afterwards should be like a tag heur

i dont have and feeler gauges yet to measure them but that's on my list of stuff to do there is a slight ticking, ive got feelers on the way in the post ordered them yesterday!

is this normal? are they supposed to be gummy like that?

no that engines well worn and probably been well abused.

maybe leaking valve stem seals making that worse / burn more oil
