HI GUYS
i think my cdi might be duff as the bike only runs rough on 3 cylinders ,number 2 is cold .i have done everything i can think of inc swapping coils around new plugs carb service cleaned all connections good fuel and still its not cured ?
the pipe on 2 gets warm if i rev the bike but then goes cold again at idle fuel is getting through so all thats left is the cdi circuit i guess ??
any thoughts please.
dave.

Hi Dave, Have you checked the valve clearences,If valves are tight it will not run correctly.

hi bud thanks for reply
i have checked everything ,clearances, carbs are cleaner than new, diaphragms are all good, plugs swapped, coils swapped,i have even swapped all the internals from carb 1 to carb 2 and vice verse.i have the head off at the mo thinking it might be a valve seat problem or bent valve but it isnt. the big and small ends are perfect as are the pistons ,rings and crank bearings .am normally good with bike troubles but this has me beat ???? for now

im assuming the genesis uses a wasted spark - my 1989 fzr 1000 does, if so it wont be CDi as it will fire #2 and #3 at the same time.
pull the plug, connect it to the coil, ground the thread of the spark plug on the engine and hit the starter button, if it sparks the CDi/coil/plug are ok.
but if its firing on #3 its not the CDi

just checked the manual, fzr400 is a wasted spark, #1 and #4 fire together, and #2 and #3 fire together.
the grey wire that feeds #2 and #3 from the CDi also feed the tachometer, so if the bike idles and #2 is cold, and #3 and the tacho are working its either 1. dead plug (test by putting onto a known good coil lead - i.e. #1 or #4), 2. dead lead from coil pack (test by using a known good plug and seeing if the leads going to #2 and #3 both produce a spark), or 3 - carbs/fuel blockage somewhere

Now then Dave; you got lost then ?
Welcome in anyhow.
Right; on another forum.
So replacement plug caps have not cured it.
You swapped out coils/leads with a spare set.
You placed your hand over the offending carb to blank airflow and thought it was a pilot circuit fault as it seemed to clear it.
You stripped and cleaned carbs; which I know you can do very proficiently.
You checked the valve clearances and found them in spec.
You have removed the head and checked valves and valve springs.
I could give no input on the ticking from the video you posted.
Have you access to an inductive timing light gun ?
Put the pick up clamp on the offending cylinder plug lead and
tape down the gun trigger and route all the gun leads away from the exhaust.
Start the motor and observe the light on the gun at various revs.
Try it on a good cylinder lead for comparison.
You don't need to aim the gun at anything; just observe the light.
The gun light will give you a very clear indication of any problems of ignition on the faulty cylinder.
If it lit ;the cylinder is receiving an ignition pulse.
Specialist diagnostic tools/meters are available that do exactly the same job but are costly.
Most oldtimers still have a timing gun.
Get back with the results !
Hope this is of some small help.
