While my carbs were off having some minor work done I decided that I would have a go at checking my valve clearances after reading the guide on here, It didnt look to scary. Seeing the figures I was getting from the rear cylinders I chicken out of doing the fronts and wanted to get these calculations checked.


By the way I did do a quick exel spreadsheet that does all the maths for you(layout is as is above), if anyone wants or needs a copy give me a shout unless the admins can post it some how....

The reason I posted the above is really about what effect this would have had ? my bike runs well apart from the fact it's seems a bit juicy would this make sense, What should I expect when I replace and get valves back to where the should be ?

I finished taking the measurements tonight, but i have just relised looking back over the guide that measurements were taken from between rocker arm and cam instead of shim and rocker arm as in the guide. Does this make any difference ?

Re check one to make sure, but I measured both ways and it seemed the same, certainly well within the plus and minus limits.

Only when the clearances close right up [nil or less] and compression is lost will you notice any difference in performance.[May show on a Dyno run]
Starting and low speed running will be poor.

Well just a follow up after speaking with Ricky O about my shims he advised me to measure between the rocker and the shim as there is a difference between the 2 different places, there was a difference of .05.

Hi, did You or anyone else still have that excel spreadsheet calculator for the valve clearances / shim size? There is a link on here from 2011 but it doesn't work anymore?
