Failed Reg/Rectifier?

Hello, could i ask for some more advice please as I am new to the NC 30 world. as i explained in a previous post i am getting a friends NC 30 ready for the road again as its been laid up for a couple of years, its been run up every month in that time though. so after brakes ans steering head bearings i have now entered the world of electrics with it.
so when i took the job on it was explained to me that the last time it was run smoke was seen to come out of what i now know is the reg.rectifier unit. this appears to be a aftermarket unit branded as Tour Max.
looking at this units connector pins with the three pins that are fed by the generator windings on the top row there is evidence of heat build up and burning where the metal backing plate is bonded to the unit on the left hand side just below the connector housing.
is this a common fault at all and what might it point to?
i have reg/rectifiers from my old race bikes steel frame cbr 600 Fp/fv , are they a suitable replacement as the pin lay out looks the same?
i have tested the generator at the first connector and i have continuity between all three pins but i cant remember if this is healthy or not? also when the bike is running she is kicking out about 33 volts at 4000 rpm on all three windings.

cheers for any help/advice
stu

This is a very useful fault finding guide.

It does sound like your reg/rec is knackered though.

I have had reg/recs fail in two different ways: either giving out too much volts or giving too little. Use the electrical fault finding sheet from previous posting. Sometimes you measure the device when cold and then it seems OK, then when you run it for a while it warms up and you see the volts go up or down. A week ago I had the rec/reg blow the 30 amp fuse. Fortunately I carried a spare rec/reg.
Remember, a rec/reg that gives out too many volts can fry you battery. I've had that, strange hissing sound and a warm bum :-( You can get battery health LEDs that flicker red when the volts are too low and red/green when too high. When riding and the battery is correctly charged up the light is green. Otherwise, install a little volt meter on the dash.
