Hello all,

I have a problem, i have recently had my bikes engine out for a coat of paint on the cylinder head (no where else). When i finally got the lump back in and installed i went to hit the start button and CLICK and short HIGH PITCH SQUEAL. I have tried a number of things...

- had the starter motor out and tested with battery, it span. I also tried to test it whilst connected to the solenoid and no luck.
-removed and cleaned the earth strap contacts reconnected and still nothing
- bridged the solenoid and ZAP

Anybody ever had similar symptoms/ problem? any help would be ideal!

Starter solenoids need the sufficient voltage and GOOD connections to operate.
The click and squeal you describe sounds like the solenoid engaging and disengaging rapidly as it will if either of the above are lacking.
By ZAP ; I presume you mean there were sparks from the solenoid terminals (which would be normal when you bridge the teminals )
Did this turn the starter. ?
Is the battery fully charged and good ?
Have you had the starter gear (peanut) cover off.?
The solonoid may be tested by applying 12v to the single operating wire thus eliminating starter/safety circuit problems.

Sounds like ;
low battery voltage,
poor positive /negative connections ( battery and frame)
failed solenoid.
in that order.

as above but - if the soleniod failed the engine would have turned over when you bridged the contacts.

Charge the battery.

When i bridged the solenoid it only made a zap, no turning of the engine at all.
I also tested the starter motor whilst attached to the solenoid and nothing just a click!
I don't know if id put it down to battery as its only about 6 months old and a motobatt. the battery reads about 12 1/2v.
I did notice when i press the button all the volts of the battery drops to near enough nothing… so it could be battery, just can't see how it would have gone wrong so fast...
I have indeed had the peanut cover off, i have by hand turned the cogs/ gears and they move fine…

As Boris states; charge the battery and report back.
No battery make except a Lipo is guaranteed to retain a charge over an extended period.

Can you not jump your battery from a know good source ?

Well i just tried starting as is and well there was smoke from the solenoid… the earthstrap also felt pretty darn warm too :\

Something is shorting directly to earth or the starter is jamming.

Make sure nothing is rubbing where the starter lead boot fixes to the starter motor.

No chance of transposing the engine earth and the starter feed by accident I suppose.!

Interesting you have a earth cable to one of the bolts to the starter motor… mine has one wire, the live feed i believe...

Not intentionally Luke; that would just be the way it was when it was stripped for cleaning when first purchased.
I think the earth is usually fixed at a rear c/case bolt.
I just pulled any old 1WG stripdown pic from my files to show how easy the rubber boot would be displaced by the fuel pump mounts when refitting the tank.

Where is your main battery earth fixed.?
It should be the engine not the frame.


Just looking thru the 2TK/Yzf750 build and the earth is in a similar place as std.

Ah yes i was going to say mine is connected to the rear of the case… I have recently painted my engine support bars could this be a culprit? due to lack earth? but then id say bike is pretty well connected through the axel like rods holding engine in the frame… real head scratcher! had a post on practical sports bike Facebook with nearly 100 replies, still not got to the bottom of it! so thought id ask here as its catered for FZR!
