anybody running alloy race clipons with standard road gubbins aka switchgear, have you just drilled a hole to locate the dowel?

You can drill it but get it right first time or you'll bugger the tube, file the hole smooth after drilling to reduce any stress raisers.
Also make sure the position won't interfere with the brake and clutch levers when pulled in.

Cant you just file the noggin (?) off the switchgear? I don't think any of my bikes still have them on and never had a problem with the switches rotating.
Cheers

In same situation with a set of ricks lovely alloy bars bit reluctant to drill into them for the dowal was thinking of just making one for the throttle and filing off the switchgear ones.

I drill mine. After all, they are just alloy bars, designed to bend in a crash. I use Woodcraft and it is only ~$10 USD for a replacement bar so no need to get too precious over them!
