Petrol tank cleaning and sealing
Hi my fuel tank has some corrosion on the inside which I want to sort out. Has anyone cleaned and coated the inside of the petrol tank with POR-15 or Flowliner products?
Thanks
Thanks

I did my Z400 tank with por 15, it includes everything to clean and seal and was pretty straightforward to use. Good product id use it again.

I used some stuff ... it has cirtic acid in. You dilute it, pour it in the tank and leave it overnight. It cleaned a rusty tank very well - well enough for me to find the holes in it
I used it again to take some surface rust off the inside of the second tank.
I put a bit of clean engine oil diluted with some petrol in and tumbled the tank in my hands. I left it until I was ready to use it, then drained it swilled a little petrol through it and used it normally. You only need to seal it if you have a lot of pin holes otherwise I wouldn't bother.
3TJ tanks have a water trap on the left side rear. There's a standing seam on the inside that collects water and crap to the outside of it.

Metal Rescue or Evap-o-rust if you can find it. It'll eat the rust without taking any good metal out. Then you can prep for Por-15 or other liners of your choice.

The 2nd stage product, the etcher isn't meant to be a de-ruster, although being an acid it will eat some rust while doing it's thing. Ideally you're supposed to start with a rust free tank before using the Por-15 products.

Re: Petrol tank cleaning and sealing
B&Q metal restorer for about £8 a gallon
leave it in (mixed 2to1 with hot water) for 24 hrs then rince and clean, (you only need about 4 pints in the tank if shaken regulary as it mainly the bottom that's fu*ked)
if your not gonna be useing the tank straitaway then 1/2 a pint of 2t petrol mix, shaken around the tank, will coat it with a thin layer of oil and stop further rusting
if you got a real dirty tank then a handfull of nuts chucked in the tank and then shake every hr or so will agitate and remove more crud/rust,
IMPORTANT make sure you remove the fuel sender and tap before hand. then blank over the holes with rubber and a bit of thin steel plate drilled to suit to stop it leaking

Re: Petrol tank cleaning and sealing
Cheers for the replies, I got a Por 15 bike tank repair kit from Frost. Anyone got any tips?
Can I do 2 tanks with it by emptying the first tank into the 2nd?
Also whats the best way to seal the tank? I dont really want to risk wrecking the fuel tap or the level sensor..
