I want to get the wheels powder coated and am trying to figure out how to support the bike while I remove the wheels. It looks like the exhaust has to come off, and radiator, to get a firm jacking point. Before I do this, is there an easier way?. I have seen paddock stands for the front wheel that seem to support the bike from the fork brace, wonder if I need to get one of those.

Abba Stand...

It mounts onto the bolts/nuts on the frame and lifts the rear wheel. Then strap the rear end down to the stand, then tighten the strap to lift the front wheel. (I've only used it to lift the rear wheel on mine, but have been told to use this method to get both up)

where are you based?

You can't balance the bike on the abba stand alone. There needs to be another point of contact with the ground.

I'm down in London. I've got a stand for single swing arm bikes, the rear wheel doesn't seem to be much of a problem as it looks like I can just remove it and leave the stand supporting it, it is the front that may be tricky.

Actually, I have got an abba stand somewhere, I used it when I had a ZXR400. between the two of them I should be able to get the wheels off.

The padock stand or Abba stand will only enable you to get the rear wheel off as the natural balance of the bike will still mean it is resting on the front end.

Options:

Get a front end stand
Take the weight off the front end by straping the yolk to the rafters of the garage/shed.
Having removed fairings - use a jack and a piece of wood under the engine sump to lift the front end.

I don't have a front end stand (yet) and have use both the other methods effectivly, and with the Abba stand the bike is very stable.

Im doing the very same thing at this very moment. Im using an abba stand ( borrowed from DM) with the front suspended on a front paddock stand and it is very stable but just make sure your selection of front paddock stand allows you to remove the front axle.
Ive got some soft wood packed underneath the bike jus incase something goes awry

Thanks all. I managed to chock up the sump so that the jack could go underneath and slid a single arm rear paddock stand on the back wheel. Jacked her up and slipped the front out and then lowered it onto an old wheel ramp packed with wood. Nice and firm, then took off back wheel. The wheels are now being re powder coated as we speak. Starting to come together now, the tank will be resprayed soon and then it all goes back together. I will stick up some pics when done.

Just a quick note about the abba stands... you can buy an adapter peice from them that allows you to lift the front wheel so you can have both wheels off the ground, I have it and it really is worth the extra money :)
