hey guys i picked up a nc30 vfr400 from a friend, shes a bit rough but and needs a tidy up, its been sitting 3-4 yrs soo.

1. the r/r was apparently dead and removed when i got the bike, ive plugged it back in (while waiting for a new one an me being curious) i thought maybe it should still crank over and start off of a jump start, but i dont get any lights or anything electrical to work, ive checked fuses and they all appear to be ok, i can cross the starter relay and itll crank but i dont seem to get anything electrical, is this because for the r/r?? or is there another issue it may have?

2. fuel lines? since its been sitting for so long should i look at replacing all off these or just wait till its up and running to see how it runs(just thought might be full or gunk from sitting around)?

3. what are the requirements with rwc? as in legal lights and indicators ect? clearly like a car they need to be working and visable but with indicators are just any ebay cheapish led ones fine? do they need to be of any special size? hid head light im guessing are out just like in a car?

4. what else is required apart from the obvious (tyres,lights,mirrors,oil leaks brake pads)? will a tinted windscreen pass? i have all the fairings at work repairing cracks and splits in them gonna paint them all up nice.. anything else i should replace before taking it in.

5. any recommended wreckers? sites? or places to go in melb for advise and mechanical issues?

6. what should i do for a service? oil, oil filter, plugs, air filter, flush and replace break fluids and coolant? do these bike have a separate gear box oil? anything else?

7. to stop me asking all of these silly questions whats best for a repair manual? would a honda one on ebay be good enough for basic infomation, or is there somewhere online i could download one?

Possibility for question 1, have you checked the main fuse located within the starter relay.

Hello bud hopefully i can help with a few of your questions,

2. Yes its definatly worth replacing the fuel lines, they often look in perfect working order but when the bike gets hot go very soft and can close up leading to all kinds of poor running issues. A cheap and easy fix Rick oliver sells the correct hose for around £8-10 last time i checked.

4. First of all what country do you live in? You wouldnt have much trouble passing an MOT with a tinted screen over here in the UK but i havent got a clue about anywhere else.

5. Best place to go for parts is Rick oliver, his price list is in a sticky thread somewhere here. He's a top bloke and will go a long way to help people with problems, sells loads of different bits for the NC's at very good prices and knows the bikes like the back of his hand!

6. Service wise id go for everything you said, but make sure you use a genuine air filter or you will be spending a long time setting it up correctly with an aftermarket replacement, id also give the carbs a good clean and ultrasonic bath if you can. After such a long time standing everything gets gummed up really badly unless if course the previous owned had the good sense to drain them before storage, but with the induction it is best to keep everything standard the 30's are so sensitive to filtration any messing around can cause a whole world of problems. No seperate gearbox oil and last but not least it may be worth checking the valve clearances while you have everything else apart.

7. You could go for a Haynes manual which are very good at explaining things and can be alot easier to understand than a workshop manual, but its worth getting both the workshop manual can be downloaded on the hom page of this site along with alot of other useful information.

Another question I believe the ignition is dicky it doesn't turn power on when the key is in on position I chased the wires back to the plug and when I cross the red wires it powers up and cranks over as normal.. But there is 3 wires on the plug what's the blue one do?

Instead to replaceing the ignition could I just wire up a switch in a hidden position as the ignition still goes into the steering lock position. I figure if I can work out how to hot wire it anyone with the brains to steal a bike will most likely know how to hot wire it to..
