Bought a chain recently (thanks Kayla) it came with a rivet link and not having a riveter I ordered a couple of split links.
Fitted it tonight but the split link has about 2mm of play ie the outer plates are 2mm wider, both chain and link are 520. Can you get different width split links or is this normal?

Did you put the O-rings in ?

The split links you have are for a different make or grade of chain .
Also some sell an o ring link minus the o rings instead of stocking two different types of link,one dealer local to me pulls this stunt.( motocross men must not be bothered about chains flailing off !)
Each chain manufacturer has different specs for chain and most are not interchangeable.
Get the make and grade of chain from details stamped on the chain sideplate and order the specific link.
You can join a rivit link without a special tool but the tool makes a tidier job.
Save the incorrect ones for emergency spares.
Many riders must run with incorrect links but I would not trust them; and now you have noticed,neither will you.

Funny enough I bought them from a motocross shop. The o rings are in, the chain is a Tsubaki XRG. I'll try and find the correct link I really don't fancy my chain coming off, could turn out nasty.

None of your mates have a link tool ?
The old style of nutsplitter makes a tidy job.
Some do it with a very heavy screw clamp and a ball bearing.
An old hand can do it by peening.

I might buy a riveter seen as I have cut two links out of my chain instead of one there's a Bergen one on eBay for £28 there are others but too pricey for me

A chain riveter is something you but once if its any good ... I'd steer clear of of cheap ones.

I bought a cheap one as I thought I would not use it much. I was right, I didn't , it broke on the first outing.

but i get my 520 chains from dirtbikeexpress on the bay, their RK gold 520 chains, and come with the proper split link with O rings to suit, never had a problem with em £54.99 delivered
although they are way to long, so you gotta shorten em, angle grinder and centre punch does the job
worth remembering the old adage "measure twice cut once"

Same here, buy mine from him too,

I made a guage on my door with a screw which i place the chain on let it hang and cut the link where my lower mark indicates the length
