Does anybody know if is possible to remove sump on NC24 without going through the complete ball ache of stripping off exhaust ? There looks to be enough clearance tight but do able, anybody have any experience in this area?

No you cannot.

Nightmare looks like exhaust is coming off this weekend then. Can you get away with just stripping off front pipes?

the rear pipes are part of the collectorbox. To get the exhaust off you have to take the engine out of the bike first, then remove the exhaust, then you can remove the sump

Why are you taking the sump off?

Whoever had the bike before had tightened up the sump plug so tight that removing the plug cracked the case which is a nightmare. Is there not enough clearance with the front header pipes removed as there looks to be enough clearance. I really don't want to get engine out of frame if it comes to that I think I may have to give up on this project as its costing far too much grief and expense. It's so frustrating after struggling to get the bike running nicely I have now encountered this problem.

No you cannot get it off.

There is no give in the rear pipes, they are welded to the collectorbox, if you undo the front pipes the exhaust wont move anything.

If you try to jiggle / bend it your risk snapping the rear studs.

Sump removal / exhaust removal often writes many of these older bikes off, new exausts cost a fortune anyway and you have to drop the engien which takes ages of time.

If your paying a garage, replacing an exaust can easily cost twice what the bike is worth.

There are some new aftermarket stainless steel exhausts that have been released that heav the rear headers on slip joints to allow you to remove the colelctor without taking the engine out. unfortuantly that doesnt help you at the moment as you dont have that exuast.

You could i guess hack the rear headers off and try to patch them up with some weld and filler etc but for the hassle its easier to get the engine out.

These old bikes will always be a money pit, they are quite nice to ride, more so if you set them up properly but they are by no means a cheap and cheerful ride.

the compact design means it takes time to work on them, many have been neglected so need lots replacing and parts are often rare / expsnive.

I think I threw about 1500 quid on my NC24 when I serviced it, gave it new tyres / chains and bearings (rear swingarm hub bearings are nearly 100 quid for the set). Didnt even do any bodywork to it.

Update: I finally got the sump off bike by only removing front exhaust pipes. I am not going to lie it was tricky and two sump bolts had to be cut to aid the removal but I am overjoyed it was possible without removing rear pipes and the faff that involves. just sump, sprockets, chain, brakes and potential fault in the cooling system to sort and it will be nearly done
