The NW 200 and a knackered engine

My mate and I went to the NW 200, he was on his 3TJ2. It started burning oil and the oil level fell below the window and the bike lost power. Big knocking noise an one f@@@@d engine.

Well he may have learned a lesson but the question is which way forward. The bike is immaculate so is it an engine rebuild which will be expensive or a second hand motor which may be unobtainium.

Your thoughts please.

Is it an SP ? How many miles did it do with the "problem" ?

If you want to run the engine again then use a mechanic's stephascope or a long piece of metal and listen to it. Drop the oil and see if it looks like metalic paint and look at the magnet on the sump plug.
It sounds like a big end which is bad news. Big ends are shell bearings they have "white metal" facings which is designed to wear out before the shell and crank touch so if you're lucky that's all that will have happened. If you're unlucky you will have scored the crank shaft journal.
Engine strip down - spilt the crank cases inspect the shells and the crank, repair and rebuild ...
Or another engine which aren't easy to find and an SP engine is even harder.

i think the only way to get a 3tj engine is to buy a full bike,
an i wasn't doing that i have almost two now, just need a set of forks and 2 top ends and i would have 2 full bikes

..... maybe.

I have my Black 3TJ which is the most reliable bike I think I've ever had.
The Bimota which I'm currently fitting a Dynatek CDI to - I need do the timing.
The Project 3TJ - which ran and when I get some spare time I'll push on a little more
The Project / project 3TJ which I'm collecting parts for and dead reckoning says "just" needs some wheels.

And it's a garage not a shed
