Hi all, been cleaning the bike up ready for new bodywork. It's going fine except for the cast subframe part under the seat. I've tried a few things but nothing seems to shift the black shite left by that smouldering fuckin dust sheet that caused me so much grief

What about carb/brake cleaner? That's pretty good at shifting lots of gummy stuff and the high pressure spray might get into the casting marks, you might need to add a dash of elbow grease on a toothbrush though.

Yeah I tried that Kayla and I wasn't sparse with the elbow grease either good job I work out ha ha. Also tried a bit of autosol, different wire brushes and panel wipe! The problem is that hateful fucking dust sheet has left a rock hard black tarnish on the frame, exhaust and footpegs etc. I have managed all those parts ok but the cast subframe part is proving more difficult however it is not as badly damaged as the rest.
I should do a thread on my progress really but don't seem to get the time at the moment.

Have you tried a hot air gun? Might be able to soften it up to scrape it off?

It's more like a ground in sut and the roughness of that part of the frame makes it difficult to clean, the rest of the frame was polished so I presume there will be a lacquer on the subframe part.

try a metal saucepan scourer with the brake/carb cleaner
or failing that try a scotchbright pad
if that don't work try some wet n dry paper, start off course and work down to a finer grade

Paint it with 5 wheels silver.

If you're still stuck with this mess you may want to try some Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) Butanone. Should dissolve any plastics but its used in paint stripper so quite aggressive stuff. You can get it on ebay.

Does anyone have experience using "mag wheel" cleaner on ally frames?

The frame on my NC35 is also looking a bit daggy, mostly where it remains an as-cast finish, as the staining is in the indentations...

NC35 .... see that's where you went wrong. I'd still paint it and 5 wheels is cheap.
