hi guys,
After having my clutch replaced because it started slipping (friction plates, steel plates and diaphragm springs) by a motorbike garage. (Took them 4 return trips to finally get it all replaced, i can't take it back to them because I argued with them over the bill and they don't want my business anymore.)
My clutch is still slipping, i have stripped the clutch down and everything appears to be there and within the tolerences stated in the haynes manual.
The only part i havnt checked is the one way clutch, the haynes manual says "with the one-way clutch face up check the hub rotates freely in a anti-clockwise direction and locks against the sprags in a clockwise direction", my problem here is what is face up on the hub? can any one help?
Adam

What oil did you last put in the bike?
If it was fully synthetic then there is your problem.

What plates/springs are you running? I've always used the Honda steels and fibers, even the racers I know use OEM, but some have had better luck with aftermarket springs.

That really isnt true at all.
Many people on here use fully synth without issue. Even Honda say that their Ultra S9 10/40 fully synth is fine.
The problem arrises when using fully synth oil with friction modifiers (mainly car based oil) as they can contain high amounts of moly grease to imrpove milage but wiht a wet clutch it will cause slipping.
Sometimes new oil of any kind will cause a worn clutch to slip as it will clean the plates off a little better, but this is just becuase the clutch is worn, not becuase of the oil.

If the sprag clutch is working ok it will be obvious, locks when rotated in one direction and freewheels in the other. Note only halve the clutch is controlled by the sprag mechanism, easier to test with clutch plate removed.

Hi there,
I serviced it with Motul Semi Synth.
Its got genuine Honda friction and steels, but i had to have EBC diaghram springs because the Honda springs are discontinued.
in regards to the sprag clutch, it does rotate one way and locks the other but how can i test if the bearing has been put back in the right way? which way should it lock when fitted on the bike?
Thanks
Adam

I'm pretty sure you can't fit it back to front. Due to a slight misunderstanding I actually have a complete clutch in the office, so I can check in the morning. I've been looking at the diagrams all afternoon to try and work out which way the clutch basket rotates, and I think it's backwards, based on the engine rotating forwards and driving the input shaft of the gearbox, which obviously means the output shaft will rotate the other way. I wouldn't take that as gospel though, just in case... lol

To confirm, the one-way sprag absolutely definitely can't be fitted backwards. With it off the bike, and the basket held firm, it should be able to rotate freely anticlockwise, and should lock up if you try to turn it clockwise. This is based on having the basket sat on my desk. On the bike, this translates to rotating backwards and locking forwards.
