I was in the same predicament as you. My shock looked as if I fished it from the bottom of an 19th century shipwreck.
I found that a CBR600F4 shock works fairly well, but requires a small amount of machining to get it to fit.
Basically you need to find a shock with a 12" eye-to-eye measurment and both sides as eyelets rather than one as a fork. I can't recall off the top of my head, but the CBR shock was the best bang for my buck, as I picked one up for under $40 USD shipped, and have access to a machine shop. I wanted an upgrade and wanted full damping adjustment as well as preload.
