Insurance think it's a bros?!

Hello all. A friend (honest) is trying to insure my old Nc23. I always buy insurance on the phone. I told them what it was. Happy days.

Now he's trying to buy it online and when he puts in the registration in it comes up as a Honda bros 400. Now to an idiot. A Honda 400 is a Honda 400.. But unfaired... Single sided swingarm.. Upright riding position. And not an IL4... A bros is hardly the same or in my eyes possible to blag as a CBR.

The reg/frame number/engine number etc all check out and are correct. Like I said I owned the bike and had no problems and I wouldn't sell a mate something I considered dodgy anyway. But I never knew this until he got quotes.

Would anyone here just say nothing and have the insurance silly cheap. He is 17 so the difference in price between a bros and a CBR is huge!!

How could we go about correcting the mistake wherever it's kept on record? The v5 doesn't say CBR anywhere or bros. But niether do my CBR or VFR v5s.

Not really sure what to do now. It's got no stickers at all on it. And unless mr plod is a 400 nut he'll never know a difference. In some eyes it's fine. Worst case I supposed it could be considered fraud. So it's a hard one.

Any thoughts?

He would find himself uninsured. Also, a PNC check would highlight the fact that it is insured as a Bros and he'd get a tug straight away and the bike would be impounded as a possible "clone" or "ringer".

All the bikes I've ever had V5s for have all stated VFR, CBR, etc.

Enter the reg here, and see what the insurer database thinks the bike is.

If it thinks it's a Bros there's going to be some interesting stuff to sort it out, insurers rarely like admitting their data is wrong. You'll probably end up sending a scan of the V5.

I've been getting quotes for the NC23 I'm buying.. V5 just says 'Honda' and '400', and like the OP, when I enter the reg. online it comes up as a Bros 400.

I just deleted the reg. and manually entered CBR400RR NC23 Grey Import. Can't be arsed with the potential backlash of 'playing' the insurance, also you only need one clued up cop, especially a bike cop, to pull you over and check the data and you're pretty much screwed.

Smithy, you need to send the V5 back to DVLA with a letter explaining the problem

They'll modify their database and send you a new V5

If you don't, you'll just have problems while ever you own the bike

I had a similar problem with one of my Ducati Paso's

The database insisted it was a much later bike

Which was disqualifying me from "Classic" insurance

A world of difference between a 1989 Paso and a 2005 Monster

Yeah Smithy, you should have no problem

It would probably be best to confirm by phone "after" you've insured it online to get the best deal

If you TELL them what the bike is and they are still prepared to honour the deal you should be OK

Footman James were almost embarassed when I pointed out their mistake

But it's the DVLA database which counts ;)

Thats the one the police and the insurance and MOT use

Hope you get it straightened out

Most of all ENJOY the bike

Em 8-)
