The fuel pump relay on my tri arm is getting red hot. It started getting hot after I tried cleaning up the contacts on the fuel pump.

I have since replaced the fuel pump after I broke the contacts on it, however the relay is still getting red hot with the replacement pump.

The other problem I am having is that the starter relay just clicks continually when you press the starter.

Any ideas?

(note bike is a non running project I am working on)

i had the same problem. My relay got so hot while on a ride out that it practically set of fire! Ended up bypassing the relay completely and crimped/soldered the wires together. Sorta see it as one less thing to go wrong! lol. I assumed the relay must have just burnt out but it sounds like it could be something else now!

With it bypassed, the pump runs whenever the ignition is on but when the pump gets to full pressure in the fuel line it cuts out. Works a treat!

Quick piece of advice - a bypassed fuel pump cut off relay is a major fire hazard .....

Just imagine if a float needle sticks - even with the engine off and ignition on you will be pumping fuel all over the bike.

Be careful ..... good used relays are cheap.

That is just pure dangerous. Do the sensible thing and fit a new relay.

For the sake of what about £8 i would fit a new relay, rather than the chance of your bike going up in flames

Has anyone ever had problems with jump leads losing power from a battery.
I just measured the voltage on the battery terminals (12.3) but only measured 9.0 when hooked up to the bike terminals.

thanks for the advice on that. i didnt actually consider that myself. But always listen for the fuel pump to switch on and cut out before starting the bike anyway. If it kept pumping it would be straight off.

A new relay is definetly getting bought!!

A new relay is definetly getting bought!!

It's more the worry that it might not stop if the bike goes down the road.....
