Hello,

The bike is unrestricted, and accelerates ok up until 80mph but will go no further
I tried getting passed but with throttle wide open a good 15 seconds nothing happened.
no wierd noises appearing either (or I don't know what I'm looking for)

Is it carbs? ignition?

new to the VFR400 NC30 so I have never hit the theoretical 120-130mph possible.

Think we might need to know more here....

What does it feel like when you get stopped at 80mph?
Sudden lack of power?
Engine bogging down?
Does it feel like being on a buckaroo?

What does the bike rev to in each gear?

When was the last time it had a service?

And what do you mean unrestricted?
No 33bhp washers? or factory 180kph restriction removed?

Plus did the previous owner mention this at all/any history about the bike?

The bike runs at about 10K RPM when it hits 80mph. It feels like I have reached the top speed so its a smooth decrease in acceleration really.
I would say the power delivery up to that point comes and goes in waves.

The bike has no problem revving above 10K in first and second gear. (in fact I feel the real surge starts at around 9K)

definitly not restricted to 33hp and if it were restricted to 180kph that would not explain me topping out at 140kph (80mphish)
History is clean, bought it from a mechanic in the Honda dealership network - I've given him a call he said possibly carbs but best to post online (here I am)

The bike had trouble starting last week, and I was worried I had flooded the engine (cold morning)
But now runs smooth again.

I'll take it out as soon as it dries out to give you more info.

It passed it's last MOT on 26th July 2012 no advisories
still have about 2000miles left on engine oil life

Hmm, what about 3rd 4th 5th and 6th gears, what are they like?

There's a factory thing where if the CDI can't "see" the clocks it cuts power, usually because someones bodge modded the wiring to get rid of the 180kph restriction, but with it being able to rev well in 1st and 2nd I can't see that as the problem.

How are you starting the bike?

Did the mechanic say when the carbs were last cleaned and when the plugs were last changed?

Personally I change my oil every 1500km's just to be on the safe side.

Is teh rubber flap in place between the carb inlet and the headstock?

I will have a look at the wiring behind the clocks, ask about the carbs where last cleaned and take it out for a ride as soon as i can see some dry tarmac - and get back to you !

not sure how to look at the rubber flap i'll have a peek - do i need to take the fairing off?

To look for the rubber flap just look above the top radiator, should be a plastic thing between the top rad and the underneath of the headstock

I have a 35 so it's a little different, but from memory it's the part above.

That's just the front of the airbox carb tray thingy, this is the rubber flap ma-bob.
