NC21 Collector Box - where to obtain?

Hi,

My first post, my first VFR400, bought a couple of weeks ago.

I knew when I bought it that it had a slight blow on the top of the collector box but couldn't resist the bike and it was v.cheap for that reason. Bike is running fine, plenty of power just sounds louder than normal due the hole. Any ideas on how hard these parts are to obtain now? Plenty of old threads here about obtaining aftermarket parts from David Silver etc but having been in touch with them don't stock them for the NC21 anymore. Although they do have the NC24 but I understand it doesn't fit the NC21.

Is anyone fabricating these in the UK for sale etc? Any help appreciated, the bike is too much fun, but would like to sort it now as it will no doubt get worse with time.

cheers!

Looks rather like the original and aftermarket ones are rocking horse doo-doos. Other threads here and elsewhere suggest you can use the 24 collector but it will need mods to it due to the different positioning of the silencer. Apparently fitting a new system is an engine out job too. Will the current one not weld?

Have you tried sourcing a 24 collector speedy? They are more difficult to obtain than the 21 collector. The only shot now is to have one made.

Really? Have you checked DSS recently?

That's a custom fabricated part, dss started makIng it in response to the needs of all those 24 owners!

Original 24 collectors in good condition are rare indeed.

Well, to be fair, no-one specified the replacement had to be a genuine one, nor whether having one made meant an aftermarket part like DSS's or going to a fabrication shop and having one made for you!

Yes, it seems like a replacement NC21 box is not easily obtainable!

The hole is somewhere on the top of the box, the bike was serviced at weekend and as I understand it it would be difficult to weld a patch onto the top of the box due to the shape - either way to get at it I believe you would have to take the whole lot off - an engine out job I think - so therefore if I went down that route it'd be better to put a new system in otherwise I'm only delaying the inevitable?

I can get the NC24 box from DSS, will these fit at the front end without modification? I would then need to get the NC24 end can and footrests as well I think?

Ok lets clear this up before it gets too convoluted.

If you want an NC21 genuine box then a decent option is to get a decent second hand one from Japan for not the end of the world.. Contact Moriwaki Man (Drew).. I know for sure that he has an NC24 original collector in great condition in stock, but it wont take him long to find you a price for a 21 collector.

I think you can get a decent collectorbox and shipping for less than the 200 plus vat for the david silver nc24 one, since the nc21 boxes are mild steel, clean it up before fitting if you get an original, paitn it with high temp paint and drill a couple of small holes in the box at the lowest point of each bend.. this is where they rot due to condensation forming, there are no drain holes so the water stays in there and rusts the system out.

With regards to the NC24 system.

The exit pipe is angled differently. this means you cannot use an NC21 exhaust pipe on this system.

You can use an NC24 exhaust but you need to find one first... Also you will need NC24 rear footpegs (which are like rocking horse shit) to bolt the end-can too.

The NC21 can also bolts to the rear pegs but in a different place as they are different pegs.. high level / low level systems.

You will need to remove the engine to fit the geunine box.. to fit the NC24 collector maybe not as it will have removbale rear joints, but you will need to try and find rear pegs / rear silcencer and is much hassle.

If it were me i would get a second hand one from Japan.. you can pick on up for 40 - 60 quid and shipping wont be too much.

Thanks so far for all replies and comments, I have contacted Moriwaki Man as this seems to be the best option, i.e. to get an original box then it's a straight swap without hunting for lots of other parts and/or making stuff fit.

Will let you know how I get on. Cheers Alastair.

Drew will find you one no worries, wouldnt surprise me if he hasns already got one!

Since NC21 parts dont fetch much money, and there is less to no salt used on the roads in Japan the collector box should be in much better conditino for less price...
