Sparking problem

Sorry if this has been sorted before but I couldn't find the right answer for my problem. My issue is that the bike hasn't ran for a while and it won't start again.

I've taken number 1 and 4 spark plugs out the engine to test the spark. I'm holding the spark plug on the engine casing and turning the bike over. When I first try this I get a spark at both spark plugs but after 5 or so seconds of just holding the starter button down and getting a spark it just stops and I can't get a spark again. If I leave the bike for a bit (about 5 minutes) and try the same procedure again I get a spark then again it stops after 5 seconds. I'm totally stumped on this.

It's a 1988 Suzuki gsxr400, gk73a.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried new spark plugs?

Yeah I have tried new spark plugs. I've given up on it now, I think I have a major electrical problem with it. Plan is either leave it for a year and go back to it like I've done in the past or just take it to an auto electrics place so someone else can sort it out.

Cheers for the help.
