Get a new battery there only about £25 then check the voltage across the battery make sure it rises to between 13-14v at 5k revs, if its doesnt or is higher then need a new reg/rec

How long are you using the choke for? Have you checked the mechanism is moving freely at the carb end?

So does operating the choke do anything to the idle speed?

Raises it maybe 150-200rpm it idles fine without the choke its just when i pull away it goes about 10ft then dies
