Ok for those following my project thread, you'll know that my bike is stripped at the moment. Once I get the right size sockets, the swinging arm will be coming off for replacement as it's ratty. Seeing as I'm doing this, this will be the best time than ever to sort rear shock out.

I've got the later type with remote res. Is it worth having this sent to be re-gas'd/valved and whatever (not too clued on suspension) then re-fitting, or should I go for a BMW shock? I don't want to cut the battery tray down and replace battery (battery is new as well) so BMW seems a good option and not to expensive:

With the BMW, I know you have to slightly file down the top mount (gulp) but is there anything else? It seems a rebuild of the old shock would be £150 region and a Beemer shock is £80 on the bay. Also, does the spring or valving need changing for the NC30?

I'm interested in the spec of original vs spec of BMW too if anyone knows. I know the stock has adjustable damping, but that's all I know.

Its all covered in the 2 threads about the BMW shocks mate but in short you can fit it straight out the box if you want, im told it works fine but i'll reserve judgement on that as its way to soft for a NC. Most have fitted stiffer springs but that then presents another problem, the valving is barely good enough for the soft BMW spring so will probably be useless with a stiffer spring fitted. Ideally you want it revalved to suit the stiffer spring but thats not to say it wont work if you dont, no one has had theirs revalved yet so keep an eye out on here for feedback on how it works.

I understand everyone says go for a heavier spring, so I think I'll do that. I won't get it revalved though as I imagine it's costly and wouldn't know what to ask for. I've bought that shock I linked as for £90 posted if it's not what I'm after I'll just resell it.

My train of thought at the moment is that my current shock is absolutely terrible and if you have someone sit on the back, the wheel almost scrapes the undertray - that bad. So literally anything will be an improvement, even if the valving isn't suitable for the spring.

Any idea how much a revalve would cost out of interest?

In that case probably won't bother with a revalve.
