I had to cut the block off my mates NC23 after it had melted around the connectors due to the Reg/Rect packing up... pushed the spades all back on and wrapped plenty of insulation tape round, works a treat!

my loom connector has melted as well on all 3 of the yellow wires but not the other 2, why does it do this, does this mean the reg/rec is faulty? i was just going to make new connections with spade connectors covered in heat shrink then i was gonna fill the connector with silicone to prevent water ingress

the job of the reg/rec is to convert ac voltage from the alternator to dc volts and to regulate the voltage to run 12v electrics and charge the battery etc.

a problem with reg/rec is overheating and connections becoming burnt out and arcing from the excess heat and also from vibration!

the reg/rec dispels heat by means of cooling fins(heavy duty) and also a good earth with the frame(oe).....it also cools down whilst charging the battery.....

if you are concerned, just do a few simple checks with a multimeter, test the charge rate at the battery and also the voltage output of the alternator.

i would also renew the connections after making sure everything is working ok and check it every so often to see if it happens again.

another tip on cooling the reg/rec is to use your lights more often, this allows the reg/rec to charge the battery as it loses a slight charge...keeping the reg/rec cooler!!!this theory has caused debate before!

note:that is just a rough guide of the top of my head on how it works etc.......but im sure it is pretty accurate :poke:

if the big connector is hard to find.. or your on a budget..
cut the old connector block off
strip each wire end
scrape each wire until its copper again
crimp new spade crimps on
plug each one in to the reg/rec.

same applies to the ECU i think..

**make sure you get the right size crimps before you start cutting!

either william or LP you maybe able to help, william i know i got the voltages off you months ago now for alternator>reg check but forgot to ask which pins on the "big block" that goes into reg i have to put the multimeter to? as im only now looking at getting my bike back together.
