Well i finally got my bike sorted and took her for her MOT on monday......which she passed with no advisories! Yay.
She was running on three cylinders intermittently on the way to and from the test station.
Read on here somewhere that another chap had the same prob ,that turned out to be the O-ring on the air screws perrishing....lo and behold , checked this on the carb that wasn't firing and it was mullered! Popped a new one in and bobs your uncle!
Now need a dry weekend to give her a good run!

Which air screws?

Just wondering, as I have had loads of carb troubles and my carbs are out on the bench at the moment.

The air/fuel mixture screws under the carb. There should be a small (5mm i think) O-ring under the spring and air screw ( there's a tiny washer in there as well ) they perrish and cause too much air to be drawn through and that cylinder can run lean or the bits of O-ring can block it too causing it to run rich.

Ahhh, under stand now.

Mine looked ok - bit squashed ( defo not round ) but not perished.

How much were new ones - and did you have to buy a full set of o-rings for the rest of the carb.

Chap in the bike shop said don't worry about as i'd just bought some exhaust gaskets. Must be pence!

Well i thought i'd take the old girl for a decent ride out yesterday as it finally stopped raining. Ran like a dream until about a mile from home on the way back , she just died on me. Battery completely flat! Did have the lights on the whole way so i guess the reg/rec has given up the ghost!
Ho hum! New one ordered so will hopefully be back on the road by the weekend

I had a similar thing happen to me, only I was miles from home, what a pain...

I got a small voltage sensing LED and fit it on clocks, next time I'll know if the charging system isn't working.

Well new reg/rec fitted and battery charged up, gonna get a multimeter to test that the battery is charging.

Question is.....how long does the reg/rec take to start getting warm? Only had it running a couple of minutes as it was raining out and didn't want to be overcome by fumes in the garage.

It wont really charge much on tickover - if at all.

Never felt mine, banged it on and left it.

The reg/rec takes the AC volts ( think 50v AC 3 phase at 4000rpm ) from the genny and regulates it to around 14V DC which is enough to run all the electrics and charge the batt.

You need a multimeter, maplins sell one for £4.

Put that on the batt terms and check the voltage. Not runnning and running.

I bought a solar charger for mine from Maplins and its never gone flat.

Still having trouble with number 4 cylinder running colder than the others. Now discovered that one of my air screws is completely different to the other 3. Guess a phone call to graeme france is in order
