Ordered me a new oil filter from David Silver. It arrived today and is half the size of the original.

Upon ringing them they said Honda have changed the size and it's correct just in case anyone has the same situation as me and nearly sends it back.

Honda reduced the range a year or two ago.
Now the same filter fits a greater range of bikes.

Check the torque value printed on the case, my new one is marked 2.8 to 3.0 kg/m, the old one was only 1.0.

I always buy half height filters anyways - I can fit my oil cooler then! Yam Fazer types fit..

I made a scribling of the torque settings in my notes just in case. This is my first vfr and I just thought crikey thats a bit small compared to the one fitted.
