Hi well some of you may have seen my project thread I'm building an nc30 from the frame up.
A few week ago I was offered 2 nc30s that have been stood for 8-10 year a road bike and a track bike for not a lot of money so I took them. Now I'll be picking them up at the end of the month.

I was looking for advice on getting them running I was basically thinking of servicing them. Clean the carbs and try and start them. Can any one tell me if I'm missing anythIng or advise me if you'd go about it differently

I'll be keeping them both for now mate till I no exactly what I want and don't there a few boxes of spares with them as well though with exhausts etc so what I don't want will be available. But until I have them to sort through it all I won't no fully what there is

My Seed that I bought recently hadnt been started in 6 years. I dropped the oil, refilled with new. Cleaned the plugs and set the carbs. I sprayed wd40 down the bores and and cranked it over by hand a few turns. Refilled the tank with fresh fuel, charged the battery and it started 3rd attempt.

Drain the fuel out the tank (good time to check for tank rust)

Drain the oil

Refil and replace oil and fuel


Crack plugs and check they havn't been covered in oil when bikes were stored (clean if approperiate)

remove carbs, clean fully, if they weren't drained properly they might be a pain to clean.

Should fire up fine.

Good time to overhaul the forks, if they sit so long the seals can perish and will soon start leaking when your riding. Tyres will be past their best, also check chain is not rusted anywhere (and clean)

Providing the elements havn't gotten to it too badly should start right up.

Theres some videos on youtube of a guy in the states that owns a junk yard, he started up a car that had been sitting for 50 years.. didn't even change the oil :D

You need to ensure that the engines are not seized, before you start cranking on the starter motor. Remove spark plugs first then rotate crankshaft, full cycle, by hand. Once your happy, crank the engine with the starter, still with the plugs removed, to get oil around the engine and some oil pressure.

Before you refit the plugs ensure you have a voltage at each HT lead. Then you just have to sort your carbs out.

Good point about checking for a siezed engine.. if you try to start it you'd just get a click from the starter motor, I dont' think the motor is powerful enough to do any damage, but if you put the big into a high gear (6th for example) and push it forwards the engine should rotate.
