Fork Spring upside down?

Hi All!
Have just stripped down my forks to replace the tubes and have noticed the springs are the opposite way up to that specified in the haynes manual, (with the more loose coils on the spring facing the ground) was just wondering if this is an error of whoever last stripped down the forks, or there is an advantage to them being this way up?
Cheers
A

Tighter helix sits at the top on normal forks but at the bottom on upside-down forks

Should have mentioned its for an NC30, late type fork
And thanks, this is why you cant blindly follow haynes manuals!!

I beg to differ, the factory manual says "install with tapered end facing down" which IMO means "install spring with its closer wound coils at the bottom", which is what the haynes manual says.

Factory manual says the opposite to Haynes and I know who I prefer to believe

Bow to Neosophist, I should have read the Honda Common Service Manual first. Haynes is incorrect but one needs to know which end is tapered and then go by the Common Service Manual directions.

Tapered springs ? As in a smaller diameter at one end ?

Yes, after further consideration prompted by this post IMO the tapered end locates more precisely on the top of cartridge / damper rod. Any other opinions?

Well before i stripped them i was riding with the more spaced coils pointing down, and it seemed to ride fine, didn't notice any issues when braking hard, I'll just go with what i know and keep them that way when i rebuild them i reckon
