Have you tried a new battery, they need a good kick to fire up

cheers but the battery is nearly new as are the plugs, I just thought I"d ask before I dive in as sometimes someone may have had a similar problem and knows just where to start but I guess it will be a process of ilimination starting with the sparks and ending up with the carbs

Try draining the fuel if its the same old stuff it had in the tank last time you rode it and give it a fresh drink of lovely octane juice.
If that fails to sort the issue i would suggest check the plugs and see if they are either sooty or wet with old fuel. A simple plug clean and re-install should be ok but they may have to be replaced.
Good luck.
