Not having much luck ... Help :(

Post by nazzurro_19 »

Ok now before people start sayin this is my fault , i will admit i should of checked but with the hassle of insurance and tax it totally slipped my mind

Anyway , riding to work today as the weather is nice my oil light starts to flicker , i stoped and put the bike on the stand and the light flicked even more so i turned it off and turned it back on (my lights been a bit funny lately neutral etc) and it started and worked fine so i got to work and with the bike upright i undid my filler cap wiped it and put the stick back in (resting not screwed) pulled it out and completely dry!!

How easy/quick is it to do an oil change and filter? I also need to ride the bike 1.8 miles home will this be ok as the light isnt constantly on

Cheers guys n sorry for all the qs but i was told this bike was mechanically mint and maintained

Also is there a way to check for oil leaks etc other then just visually as im now concerned the bike could be rough as hell and new oil will show new faults ... Only 2nd time on the bike and 5 days of ownership .... Sheessszh

TBH, the first thing I ever do with a second hand bike is an oil and filter change.

The problem is, you don't know how long the oil level has been this low and you can't accurately estimate if any and how much damage has been done.

I would be getting myself out at lunch to pick up some oil at least to get you home, even if it's only a litre of Tesco Value car oil. Then don't ride the bike again until you've done a full oil and filter change. You may get a bit of clutch slip using car oil but a new set of friction plates is much cheaper than a new engine.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Stick some bike oil in it, you might get away with it.

Not having much luck? I think that may have changed!...
It seems you were lucky the bike got to your work place without seezing; DO NOT START IT AGAIN, at least not until you put some oil in it.

You've done the oil level check correctly and as you've found out, it's well below minimum. Either top up with same type of oil you had (if you know which) or drain out the remaining old stuff and refill with some 10W40 Semi-synthetic oil.

You can worry about the oil filter later, but if you're going to change the oil before riding home, all you have to do is open the filler cap, undo the drain bolt from under the engine (17mm hex if 'm not mistaken) and let it drain out. Replace the drain bolt (DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN) (35Nm of torque is recommended), fill up with fresh oil and check level again.
Fire up the bike keeping an eye on the oil light, it should go off after a second or two of firing the engine. Let it warm up if all is well, then switch off and re-check the oil level; top up if needed.
You'll need 2.4 litres of oil, 2.5 when the filter is changed.
When the mind is relaxed, the body will go faster! 8-)

It is a sketchy idea to ride it... you might get lucky..or more than likely, you will do it some damage that will kill it now, or cause it to have terminal issues.

I don't believe that you cannot get some oil and throw it in the bike to get you home! Or even that you can leave it there and blag a lift from someone at work - are they all bastards? Your bike might seize and kill you..it might not..it may even just have engine failure and then how are you gettng home or to work for next week?

Get some oil...put it in the bike til it reads on the dipstick...risk riding it home but at least you;ll have oil pressure. The light is not a level light like in some bikes, it is pressure. Oil pressure is all that keeps the crank tip top

Dude.

If you want me to come round and give it a once over, do the oil and filter for you then just drop me a PM. I've had 3 NC's now, ridden 4 and have rebuilt 2 so I can tell a shitter when I see one.

1.8 miles is a pretty short walk. Better to stroll home and come back with some oil tomorrow.
