Re-tapping disc bolt holes after powder coating?

Just had my wheels powder coated and even though the guy said he'd put bolts in the holes to block em off, well he didn't. i've tried gently inserting the bolts in an attempt to use them to recut the threads and its worked on a couple (winding them in a turn or so at a time then backing them off to clear the material from the thread) but i cant get them to bite on all the holes and i don't want to push it and cross thread them.

So i'm going to get a tap and try to re-cut the thread. I gather that its an M6X1MM thread but i've just read somewhere that if i'm just recutting the existing undamaged thread that i should get a M5 X 1mm tap... Is that right?

Can anyone help?

If the original hole is M6 x 1mm then you want an M6 x 1mm tap. I'd use a second tap as opposed to a taper or plug.

I know. Annoying as he said he'd do it.

i've dremel'd the mating faces back to bare metal so its all good. Taken me most of the afternoon though!

Just been thinking about ths again and surely some nitromors down the thread holes might do the job, if i leave it long enough?

It'd be less destructive on the thread than than trying to re-tap them?

I don't think you will hurt the wheel by using a tap. The powdercoat is softer than the metal.

I'm just worried i might 'miss' the thread and start cutting a new one. I am renowned for being rather cackhanded...

Plus there are 12 that need to be done..with no cock ups... not likely!

I don't think paint stripper will touch it, normally shot blast or acid chemical strip.

Grease the tap and start with a gentle to and fro to pick up the thread, then wind it in 1 or 2 turns, then back 1/2 a turn, if it starts to go tight remove it and clean off the swarf.

Once you have done 1, it will become clear how to clean out the others.
