Hi all,

I have a slight problem that is confusing me. I have recently replaced the reg/rec and the battery on my vfr.

However when i ride the bike the battery seems to die and every time i ride it i have to charge it but i have no idea as it was fine up untill about november?

I've checked the charge to the battery when the battery is charged and the bike is outputting 13.5ish.

It Drops even more to about 12.2v or below when i put the lights on which means it doesnt start if ive not charged it after turning it off sometimes?

Any ideas?

Generator may be fubar if the reg/rec has previously failed.

There's a how-to in the workshop section for generator checking.

My NC24 had the same cutting out issue, that was caused by a dodgy relay earthing out

Thanks thunderace :)
I know its rude to just join up and ask but i figured there would be some one with an idea :)

Can you remeber which relay it was or is it just a case of checking every relay one by one?

When you say "fail to start again" do you mean the battery does not crank the engine?

12.2v is a dead battery, so yes I think it's sensible to presume it doesn't turn over.

You need to do a full electrical test.. don't assume the battery is ok, it might be dead.

Your voltage sounds low, and it doesn't sound like it's charging with the lights on.

First, fully charge battery.

Genny:

Disconnect the plug from the genny (has 3 yellow wires), call each wire A,B and C

Start the bike, lights off with teh plug disconnect.

Get a multimeter set to AC volts... 250 if it has a setting range.

Hold the RPM at 5000rpm.

Measure between

A-B
B-C
A-C

You should have at least 50v on all pairs.

Next:

Stop the bike and connect teh block back up (sometimes this could even be your problem if it's melted / has bad connection)

Start the bike and measure battery voltage at 5000rpm

And we can go from there

Okay so today spent most of my time checking the electrics :|

Check the generator volts and i got NOTHING on 2 of the wire combinations

But got 28v's on the last one :(

There is a little chip board behind my clocks that the conectors on it were lose to. Its runs into the back of the tacho so cleaned that up.

when i connected the wiring back up it started easy but still the battery was reading 12.7 and was only chargin at 12.8 :?

Anyone got any advice please???
