Problem With Electrics

After re-fitting the headlight/speedo/horn/switchgear and plugging it all back together the only way I can get the headlight to work is if I pull the clutch in? Also, the horn doesn't want to work either. I cannot think why this would be.

Things to note:
- I'm only using 1 headlight (the left one)
- I don't have the indicators/rear brake lights or rear brake light switch fitted. I have no front brakes

If you need pictures I can supply them, but not today.

Help please 8-)

Have you changed anything to the loom? The head light removal shouldn't cause a problem. Need to get my wiring diagram but it appears the problem is earth related.

Thanks for the input mate. If you could check out the diagram and touch base that would be great.

get ya testers out, should be 12V(+) on the horn terminals when pressed, (have you opened the switch gear?)

is the relay in for high beam RHS/OS of bike?

OHH and one other thing you need to be testing first is that the fuses are intact sorry alex, but its an easy one to forget.

let me know and ill investgate further, i cant make sence of that wiring diagram as its too small for my crappy eyes to see, ill grab the haynes out the workshop, ps EARS i hear you say ive just had some of these made, made a huge difference esp with my TYGA exhaust,

As has been suggested by porndoguk, there is an earth connection missing. The headlight relay circuit is finding an earth through the clutch switch, clutch diode and then the neutral switch, assuming the gearbox is in neutral. Horn should work too when you pull in the clutch lever. Is the loom main frame earth connection been bolted to the frame?

the earth your looking for would be on the bracket where the headlight controls loom plug is on the LHS/NS

have you had any parts powder coated, i had a problem when i connected my radiators and newly powder coated brackets made a schoolboy error of not creating a good earth path when sat in the new PC'ed brackets! an hour spent scratching my head and then the penny droped,

get some coper grease on the threads of the bolts and on the crimp lug for the main earth to getting a better contact with the frame.

Ricky/Magg - You two are superstars. Problem solved. Painted bracket on LHS of the bike was causing the problem. Thank you.

Have some Karma.
