VFR400 NC30 1989 rear suspension

Hi recently bought the early model vfr and need to stiffen or even adjust rear shock but have not the faintest wat to do bought a manual but it only showed the later shock which is differnt can see the holes around the top of shock... is there much to play with rebound and stiffness on shock many thanks luke

Hi Luke,
I think if you can i would start saving a bit of money and get a second hand after market shock. If the original one you have, is as it was fitted with no work done, it will probably be in need of a re-fresh. And personaly i wouldn't go to the hassle of taking the original one out and paying for it to be sorted, when you can spend a little more and get a far better one secondhand.
As for making it stiffer, that would mean replacing the spring (or adding preload).
What are you trying to achieve with teh shock and what sort of riding will you be doing?

You can adjust the preload on the shock by tightening the lockrings on the top of the shock.
Theres is also a small adjuster (flat screwdriver) at the bottom of the shock for soft -> hard rebound I believe it is.
