Smokey crankcase!

I bought a Genesis a few months back that i intended to turn into a track toy (on a budget of course)
When i bought it, it was a non-runner, but a bit of easy start and it was away. It needs a good carb clean etc... but is running ok, apart from the rather smokey crankcase! I had to take the pipe from the crankcase off the airbox, as it was suffocating the engine. So i'm guessing that the rings are shot, but i don't know what is the best way to go about it.
- Sell the bike as a project
- Fit a new engine
- Try and fix the current engine.
Someone please help me make up my mind!
Cheers

hello hello
- Sell the bike as a project ...yep could do If you have any plastics I'd buy ;oD
- Fit a new engine.....yep for a track toy you could fit a fzr600 3he or a thundercat lump with little bother
- Try and fix the current engine.....If its rings its probably not worth spending the £££'s for new parts when s/h engines / bikes are out there
Have you give it a good few runs to see if the smoking settles down?

I've only ridden it round an industrial estate a few times, as it isn't on the road. I'm going to stick a standard air filter in, it currently has a k&n and doesn't seem too happy about it! Then I'll give it a few more goes

I don't think the K'n'N makes any difference the restriction is in the snorkel.
Give the engine a compression test, but if it's the rings then your better off throwing a 600 in there although 1WG engines can be found.

Which 600 engine codes do I need to look out for?

3HE is easiest to fit.

Try and avoid an 89' one though as it has a separate oil cooler....not the end of the world, just another set of brackets to make

Have you tried changing the oil, just incase the oils got pertol in it if its been stood for a while? Maybe worth a try. It may stop smoking a bit with a few good thrashings, i would of thought if the rings had gone that much the exhaust would be smoking like crazy aswell?
Cheers

It does a bit, but I think it's more condensation than anything yet. I hadn't changed the oil, because I didn't want to spend money on a knackered engine, but I'll give it a go, cheers

Do the 400 engines with the silver casings fit the genesis? Or does it need to be a black one? If they don't fit, what's different?
